I’m creating a series of paper doll ancestor icons to honour and celebrate my female ancestors. It’s been an interesting journey, as I talk to my female relatives about their relationships to their mothers and grandmothers, and learn more about these wonderful women.
What strikes me most is the courage that my great great grandmothers’ possessed when they left their home country to journey to the far away land of Australia. The trip took a good part of 9 months to complete by ship. They left their relatives and extended family behind and began anew in what must have been a completely foreign landscape and environment.
Setting down roots they produced large families that would sustain them in their later years, and established a new generation of Australian family.
